ZUMBau operator's licenses can be obtained in 14 construction machinery categories at one of the 24 ZUMBau-approved examination centres. Upon successful completion of the examination, the qualification as a "Certified Construction Machinery Operator in the Construction Industry" is evidenced by a plastic card (the ZUMBau operator's license). In addition, a certificate of competence for the employer is issued. This fulfils the instruction requirements under the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
The ZUMBau qualification is one of the most comprehensive qualifications available for construction machinery operators, as the German Trade Association of the Construction Industry (BG BAU) participates in the examinations only at the ZUMBau examination centres. Therefore, only the ZUMBau qualification is subsidized by the BG BAU.

This qualification is crucial for accident prevention, i.e., avoiding personal injury and property damage, but it also promotes the economical use of construction machinery. Furthermore, it demonstrates sound knowledge of the legal regulations governing construction machinery technology, maintenance, inspection, repair, operational procedures, and work organization. The registered plastic card can be presented to state and employers' liability insurance association inspectors during construction site inspections, if required.
